All My Love
Denise McClellan, Director of Adult Ministries & Missional Service
12/22/24
As we light the Advent Candle of Love at worship services this weekend, let’s remember the many kinds of love. I can’t think of a better way to do that than to watch the “All My Love” music video featuring Dick Van Dyke and Chris Martin. Dick Van Dyke turned 99 years old earlier this month. Before the big event, he gathered with Coldplay’s Chris Martin and others to dance and sing in Mr. Van Dyke’s backyard. It’s pure joy to watch him dance barefoot and listen to him speak of love. Click the link below to enjoy some love this Advent Season.

Advent is a season of waiting. Waiting for the birth of Christ. France has been waiting for five years. Waiting for the reopening of Notre Dame. We all watched images of it burning on the news back then. The idea that it could be rebuilt and restored in just five years is truly amazing! The church bells will ring with joy on Sunday when it reopens! Click the link below to watch a story from 60 Minutes to see some of the incredible work done to reopen this magnificent building.

A Prayer for Thanksgiving
Denise McClellan, Director of Adult Ministries & Missional Service
11/28/24

Happy Thanksgiving from Desert Cross! The following prayer is by Shea Watts from The Presbyterian Outlook. Share it at your Thanksgiving table today.
The Lord be with you.
And with me.
And everywhere in between us.
Let us lift our hearts to God
in praise for the gift of this meal and this moment.
Loving God,
in Jesus, you bless, break, and pour out your love,
sharing it with us.
Draw us into your presence,
making us keenly aware of your love for us.
May we find nourishment in the food,
giving thanks for the farmers who grew it
and the hands that prepared it.
May we also find love in the conversation around this table,
remembering your sacrifice for us in our words and actions.
By your Spirit, make us one with you and with each other.
We ask these things
in the name of the one who taught us to pray, saying:
Our Father, who art in heaven
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the glory,
and the power forever.
Amen.

On the Road with Steve Hartman is a story series on CBS News. It shares many powerful stories about kindness. The story linked below is an update to a story I preached about a couple of years ago. I first heard it through The Forgiveness Project, and it’s a remarkable story about forgiveness. It tells the story of Mary Johnson who forgave Oshea Israel for a seemingly unforgivable act. Wanting to forgive to lighten her load, Mary reached out to Oshea, and they became unlikely friends and even neighbors. Bitterness turned to joy as Mary and Oshea shared their message of the power of forgiveness. All of us can learn something from their story.

The article linked below from Living Lutheran encourages us to think of the Reformation as a gift. Take some time to read it and explore that idea. See you this weekend at our 40th Celebration of Living God’s Story!
Open Doors . . . Open Boats
Denise McClellan, Director of Adult Ministries & Missional Service
9/24/24
“Open Doors” was the title of Pastor Andrea’s sermon on Sunday. In it, she spoke about welcome and hospitality as a Christian practice. She referenced a story she saw on the news about a rafting group gathering folks with differing political views and putting them in the same boat to work together. Pastor Andrea suggested we look the story up, so I did. You’ll find a link to the story below. If you missed the sermon, you’ll also find a link to the worship service.

A Prayer for Today
Denise McClellan, Director of Adult Ministries & Missional Service
7/4/24

Today we’re sharing A Prayer for Independence Day written by Pastor Jill Duffield from The Presbyterian Outlook Website. You’ll find the prayer below and a link to it online.
A Prayer for Independence Day
Lord of all, we recognize that true freedom comes through you, that our ultimate loyalty belongs to you and that our real identity is bestowed upon us by you. Every day is a gift, every breath a moment to give you praise, every hour one in which to live what you command.
Knowing that you are Alpha and Omega, we ask for the wisdom to properly order all else. On this day when we celebrate our country’s independence, we give thanks for the many blessings we enjoy in this land: the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; the ability to speak what is on our minds, even when what we have to say is contrary to popular opinion or public policy; and the freedom to worship (or not). Help us to recognize that such marks of human dignity are for all people and that you, O Lord, love and value every person and place you have made.
May our patriotism be subject to your law, our loyalty to country never higher than our obedience to your will, our pride of nation always secondary to our humble attempts to follow Jesus Christ. As we commemorate this Independence Day, we remember that all people are created equal, because you Lord created us all and called us good. May our actions, laws and hearts reflect the character of our Creator.
Amen.

Faithful Innovation is a term you’ve been hearing from Pastor Andrea and Pastor Thadd. In conversations. In newsletters. In sermons. Light in Lent
Denise McClellan, Director of Adult Ministries & Missional Service
3/5/24
My husband and I got in the car the other day, and he turned the radio to one of his favorite Sirius XM stations. A song came on I’d never heard. In fact, it hasn’t been released yet. It’s called “Can’t Hide Light” by Max McNown, and the recording comes out next month. The name of the debut album, Wandering, caught my attention as Wandering Heart is our theme for Lent. I was in a dark mood, and the song’s message spoke to me. I especially like the line: There’s a glimpse of hope ready to break through. Click the link below to listen to the song. I hope it provides some light to your day.

A Prayer for Epiphany
Denise McClellan, Director of Adult Ministries & Missional Service
1/10/24

At yesterday’s staff meeting, Pastor Andrea shared a prayer that Mother Teresa prayed with her sisters daily. It’s a beautiful Prayer for Epiphany. You’ll find it printed below.
Dear Lord, help me spread your fragrance where I go.
Flood my soul with your spirit and life.
Penetrate and possess my whole being so utterly that all my life may only be a radiance of yours.
Shine through me, and be in me, so that every soul I come in contact with may feel your presence in my soul. Let them look up and see no longer me, but only you, O Lord!
Stay with me, then I shall begin to shine as you do; to shine so as to be a light to others. The light, O Lord, will be all from you; none of it will be mine; it will be you shining on others through me.
Let me thus praise you in the way you love best, by shining on those around me.
Let me preach you without preaching, not by my words but by my example, by the catching force, the sympathetic influence of what I do, the evident fullness of the love my heart bears to you.
Amen.

The Cry from the Manger

Our Jesuit friends at the Pray As You Go website and app are offering an online Advent Retreat this year. The Cry from the Manger starts today and continues each Monday until Christmas. Each week they’ll release a meditation online. It includes Bible verses, meditation, music, visuals, and plenty of time for reflection. Here’s their description of the offering: For Advent this year, we will reflect on God’s entering into the suffering of the world. Jesus, Emmanuel, was born amongst us, right into the heart of our suffering. Jesus joined us in our suffering, and this Christmas, we incline our ears a little closer to the manger, to hear Christ’s first cry. Use the link below to start your Advent Retreat today.

All Saints Sunday
Denise McClellan, Director of Adult Ministries & Missional Service
11/2/23

The Gospel Lesson for this weekend is the beatitudes from Matthew’s Gospel. Below you’ll find a prayer written for All Saints Sunday based on the lesson.
A Prayer for God’s Transformative Blessings
“Blessed are you, O God,
for you are holy, gracious, and good,
the hope of all the faithful.
Empower the meek
and encourage the poor.
Comfort those who mourn
and fill humble hearts with gladness.
Give food to the hungry,
drink to the thirsty,
peace to the peacemakers,
mercy to the merciful,
and honor to the despised.
Sustain your saints in ministry,
until at last they see their reward:
the joy of eternal life with you;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

As I write this, people in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania remember the eleven people killed at Tree of Life Synagogue five years ago today. 10/27 is how the survivors refer to the shooting there. In the video linked below, Rabbi Jeffrey Myers has a beautiful message of hope for people of all faiths.
Reforming
Denise McClellan, Director of Adult Ministries & Missional Service
10/25/23

Churches around the country are asking themselves the same questions. What does the church of tomorrow look like? How can we serve the neighborhood where our churches are located? One church in Seattle has an answer. They’re tearing down their old church building and building a smaller one along with affordable housing for families. Columbia City Church of Hope is reforming itself to better serve the neighborhood that surrounds it. Click the link below to read the story from their pastor.
A Prayer for Peace
Denise McClellan, Director of Adult Ministries & Missional Service
10/11/23

A Prayer for Peace in Israel and Palestine
“They will not hurt or destroy
on all my holy mountain…” —Isaiah 11:9
God of Comfort,
send your Spirit to encompass all those whose lives
are torn apart by violence and death in Israel and Palestine.
You are the Advocate of the oppressed
and the One whose eye is on the sparrow.
Let arms reach out in healing, rather than aggression.
Let hearts mourn rather than militarize.
God of Justice,
give strength to those whose long work for a just peace
might seem fruitless now. Strengthen their resolve.
Do not let them feel alone. Show us how to support their work
and bolster their courage. Guide religious leaders to model
unity and reconciliation across lines of division.
Guide political leaders to listen with their hearts as they seek peace and pursue it.
Help all people choose the rigorous path of just peace and disavow violence.
God of Love,
we lift up Palestine and Israel — its people, its land, its creatures.
War is a monster that consumes everything in its path.
Peace is a gift shared at meals of memory with Christians, Muslims, and Jews.
Let us burn incense, not children. Let us break bread, not bodies.
Let us plant olive groves, not cemeteries.
We beg for love and compassion to prevail
on all your holy mountains.
God of Hope,
we lift up the cities of the region: Gaza City and Tel Aviv,
Ramallah and Ashkelon, Deir El Balah and Sderot,
so long divided, yet so filled with life and creativity.
Come again to breathe peace on your peoples
that all may recognize you.
God of Mercy,
even now work on the hearts of combatants
to choose life over death, reconciliation over retaliation,
restoration over destruction. Help us resist antisemitism in all its forms,
especially in our own churches. All people, Israelis and Palestinians,
deserve to live in peace and unafraid, with a right to determine
their future together.
God of the Nations,
let not one more child or elder be sacrificed on altars of political expediency.
Keep safe all people from unjust leaders who would exploit
vulnerability for their own distorted ends.
Give wise discernment to those making decisions to pursue peace.
Provide them insight into fostering well-being, freedom, and thriving for all.
Teach all of us to resolve injustices with righteousness, not rockets.
Guard our hearts against retaliation, and give us hearts for love alone.
Strengthen our faith in you, O God of All Flesh,
even when we don’t have clear answers,
so that we may still offer ourselves nonviolently
for the cause of peace.
Amen.

This month’s Playlist theme is Gather. Let’s explore how we see that theme in a recent story in the news. Robert Carter didn’t grow up with a family. He grew up in the foster care system. Come, Holy Spirit
Denise McClellan, Director of Adult Ministries & Missional Service
5/27/23

Come, Holy Spirit, bring light to places too long languishing in deep darkness and relentless fear.
Come, Holy Spirit, bring fires of justice to people right now exploited, devalued and oppressed.
Come, Holy Spirit, bring winds of change to the farthest corners of the earth, ushering in God’s peace and abundant life.
Come, Holy Spirit, bring words of God’s deeds of power spoken in languages understood by all creation.
Come, Holy Spirit, bring new ways of being community, a revolution of grace, mercy and kindness that reveal the dignity and worth of each and every person.
Come, Holy Spirit, bring an upending of evil, an upbuilding of goodness, an upheaval of anything counter to the will of the Triune God.
Come, Holy Spirit, bring flames that burn away our dross and refine our faith so that the whole world will be drawn through us to the light of Christ and the love of God.
Come, Holy Spirit, bring truth that unmasks idolatry, undoes false teaching and leads to greater understanding among God’s children.
Come, Holy Spirit, bring reconciliation that breaks down walls, builds bonds of kinship and knits together every tribe and nation.
Come, Holy Spirit, bring comfort to those who mourn, relief to all who suffer, hope to the hopeless and encouragement to those on the cusp of giving up.
Come, Holy Spirit, bring your advocacy and intercession, your gentleness and power, your presence and compassion in order that we will bravely participate in the new things God is doing in our midst.
Come, Holy Spirit, come that we may abide in God and God in us until Christ comes again. Amen.

Reset by Light
Denise McClellan, Director of Adult Ministries & Missional Service
1/26/23

You might be wondering why we’re sharing a story about a blind man’s circadian clock and the curiosity of scientists about the man’s ability to wake up with the sun each day. It’s an interesting story, and the research into it involves frogs and mice! So, why is it on our Desert Cross Faith Formation Website? Thinking about how light resets our internal clocks each day got me thinking about how attending worship services resets us spiritually each week. Hearing God’s Word, singing God’s praises, and being in God’s light helps us hear our call to serve and love one another. Click the link below to hear the story about light and eyesight and join us this weekend to hear The Story and experience The Light.
